Polonia,Torun

La mia seconda tappa in Polonia è stata Torun... Ma perché proprio Torun vi starete chiedendo? Perché mia sorella che fa coppia di danza su ghiaccio aveva una gara li e io e i miei genitori abbiamo deciso di andare a vederla. Se non fosse stato per questo credo che non avremmo mai scoperto questa piccola perla!

Torun si trova a Nord della Polonia ed è attraversata dal fiume Vistola. È la città natale di Niccolò Copernico e il suo centro storico (Stare Miasto) che si estende lungo la riva destra del fiume è uno dei più antichi e gotici della nazione perché scampato alla furia distruttiva della seconda guerra mondiale.

È una piccola città, ma con una lunga storia alle spalle.

Nacque per mano dei Cavalieri Teutonici nel 1233 e raggiunse il suo massimo splendore durante il Medioevo quando divenne membro della Lega Hanseatica.

Attualmente è iscritta alla lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell'Unesco e passeggiando per il centro storico è facile intuirne il motivo.

La piazza principale, che si trova nel mezzo del Centro Storico, è circondata da palazzi patrizi.

Un esempio è il palazzo Pod Gwiazdą, "Casa della Stella" (che vedete nella foto sotto) appartenuto un tempo all'italiano Filippo Buonaccorsi e famoso per la sua decoratissima facciata.

Famosa anche la Dwor Artusa eretta nel sito di una precedente costruzione in stile gotico caratterizzata dai tipici mattoni rossi. Attualmente questo palazzo è utilizzato come centro culturale, sala da concerti, spazio per mostre e caffè. Purtroppo proprio nei giorni in cui ho visitato la città era chiuso, ma credo che sia davvero suggestivo.

Nella piazza principale si erige l'imponente municipio in stile gotico.

Una curiosità: ho notato questa fontana con delle ranocchiette incantate a guardare un ragazzo che suona il violino. Ho scoperto che questo giovane violinista si chiamava Janko ed era una specie di pifferaio magico locale. Secondo una leggenda, una perfida strega (quale strega non lo è!) aveva maledetto la città per vendicarsi della cattiva accoglienza ricevuta (a volte anche a me verrebbe da lanciare maledizioni quando non vengo accolta bene nei negozi o negli hotel........). Torun venne invasa da milioni di rane che divoravano tutto al loro passaggio. I cittadini erano terrorizzati al punto di non poter più uscire di casa!

Fu così che, esasperato, il borgomastro decise di donare un sacco d'oro e addirittura la mano di sua figlia (chissà perché nelle favole le fanciulle vengono sempre barattate dai genitori come se niente fosse!) a chiunque fosse riuscito a liberarli da questo problema. In molti impavidi tentarono di debellare l'invasione, ma le rane arrivavano a frotte e non c'era verso di farle andare via. Poi arrivò un ragazzetto scalzo, un umile contadino, che iniziò a suonare il suo violino (a chi non verrebbe in mente di mettersi a suonare in mezzo a milioni di rane!).

Le rane rimasero ammaliate da quella meravigliosa melodia e fu così che Janko riuscì a condurle fuori dalla città. Dove le abbia mollate tutte queste rane non ci è dato saperlo. Quello che si sa PER CERTO è che Janko sposò la figlia del borgomastro e vissero tutti felici e contenti!

Ecco una rana incantata. Con quegli occhi in effetti sembra proprio spiritata!

Tornando seri... Eccovi anche la Cattedrale di Torun. In stile gotico, con vetrate altissime e strette. Molto suggestiva.Nella foto sotto è quella nell'angolo.

E ora passiamo alla parte cibareccia! Abbiamo trovato un posticino davvero carino che si chiama Pierogarnia e che come specialità fa i famosi pierogi di cui ho già accennato nel post precedente su Varsavia. È un ristorante stretto e lungo che assomiglia un po' ad una baita.

Hanno l'abitudine di servire come antipastino un piatto con dello strutto che ahimè, non sapeva di niente, e dei cetriolini sottaceto veramente tremendi per i gusti a cui siamo abituati noi italiani. Ma tolto questo, il resto era davvero ottimo e a prezzi molto bassi!

Fanno pierogi tradizionali bolliti, o al forno e li servono in porzioni da 3, 5 o 9. Si possono prendere tutti dello stesso tipo o scegliere il proprio mix personale.

Da bere rigorosamente bevande calde (anche perché fa davvero un freddo becco!). Buonissimo il vino caldo speziato, ma questo lo sapevo già! Una scoperta invece è stata la birra calda speziata con sopra un po' di cannella. Veramente da provare!

I pierogi bolliti erano buoni anche se continuo a trovarli un po' collosi. Favolosi quelli fatti al forno di cui davano solo porzioni da 3 o da 5 perché più grossi degli altri (ovviamente se ne possono ordinare di più).

Io mi sono fatta un bel mix:

• carne di manzo e mirtilli rossi
• carne tritata, fagioli rossi e formaggio
• pollo

Buonissimi soprattutto quelli con la carne trita!

Tra un programma di gara e l'altro siamo riusciti a fare un giretto anche lungo il fiume. Per fortuna abbiamo trovato delle giornate abbastanza calde (secondo loro) infatti si arrivava al massimo a -6° contro i -15° dei giorni precedenti.

Abbiamo trovato il porto tutto ghiacciato. Anche io, come mia sorella, ho fatto pattinaggio su ghiaccio a livello agonistico. Poi purtroppo ho dovuto smettere per infortuni sia miei che del mio partner. Ma continuo ad avere un'attrazione quasi magica nei confronti del ghiaccio e della neve.

Mi sembra che questo velo bianco renda tutto magico e incantato. E mi sento nel mio ambiente.

Ma rieccomi a parlare di mangiare! Vi parlerò di due "merende". Una sempre al pierogarnia visto che oramai ci eravamo affezionati. Infatti si possono prendere anche dei dolci tra cui i pierogi dolci!!!

Ne avrei voluto solamente uno, ma si poteva prendere solo la porzione da tre e tra l'altro la cameriera mia aveva assicurato che erano piccolini........ Certo!

Ho bevuto uno dei the più buoni della mia vita, alla frutta. L'ho diviso con mia mamma perché ne davano un bicchierozzo da mezzo litro... Sempre porzioni piccole!

Si potevano ordinare diversi gusti di pierogi dolci. Io ho scelto pan di zenzero (ecco una cosa che mi sono dimenticata di dirvi è che Torun è famosa per il pan di zenzero!!!), amarene, mandorle e cioccolata e banana e cioccolato bianco. Tutti e tre buoni. Soprattutto quello con l'amarena. La cioccolata smorzava l'acidità dell'amarena e le mandorle davano quella scrocchievolezza in più (come mai quando io invento questi termini l'Accademia della Crusca non se li fila come  invece con "petaloso"???). Erano accompagnati da una salsa yogurtosa (a me sembra proprio paragonabile a "petaloso" o no?!) che credo si chiami kefir.

Mia mamma ha preso una fetta di torta di mele con gelato alla vaniglia e panna. Molto buona anche questa e "leggera" quanto i tre pierogi!

Ed eccoci alla seconda merenda. Siamo finiti, su suggerimento di autoctoni, in un caffè molto carino. Moderno, stile Starbucks e forse più caro della media dei locali della zona. Sembra di entrare in un salotto, ci sono libri e poltrone molto comode.

Io ho preso il mio mezzo litro di the e una torta alla carota con la ganache più buona che io abbia mai mangiato. Non so bene come sia fatta la ganache, ma sembrava puro burro! Vorrei provare a rifarla a casa perché era davvero una droga!

E visto che vi ho accennato al pierniki, il famoso pan di zenzero... Ecco dove ne abbiamo comprato un po'. C'erano diverse confezioni, ma in linea di massima si può trovare al naturale, ricoperto di cioccolata, o di glassa con un pochino di marmellata (di albicocche credo). Sono biscottini soffici e molto natalizi.

My second stop in Poland was Torun... But why you ask? Because my sister is an ice skater and she had a competition there and me and my parents decided to go to see her. If it wasn't for that, I think we wouldn't ever discover this little gem!

Torun is located in the north of Poland and is crossed by the Vistula River. It's the birthplace of Nicolaus Copernicus and its Old Town (Stare Miasto) that extends along the right bank of the river is one of the nation's oldest and Gothic center because it escaped the destructive fury of the World War II.

It's a small town, but with a long history behind it.

He was born at the hands of the Teutonic Knights in 1233 and reached its peak during the Middle Ages when it became a member of the Hanseatic League.

It is currently enrolled in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and walking through the old town it's easy to guess the reason why.

The main square, which is located in the middle of the historical center, is surrounded by palaces.

An example is the Pod Gwiazda building, "House of the Star" (which you see in the picture below) that belonged to the Italian Filippo Buonaccorsi and is famous for its decorated facade.

Also the Dwor Artusa which is erected on the site of a previous building in the Gothic style characterized by the typical red brick is pretty famous. Currently this building is used as a cultural center, concert hall, space for exhibitions and coffee. Unfortunately, when I visited the town it was closed, but I think it's really impressive.

In the main square stands the impressive Gothic town hall.

A curiosity: I noticed this fountain with frogs watching enchanted a guy who plays the violin. I discovered that this young violinist called Janko was a kind of local Pied Piper. According to a legend, a wicked witch (which witch is not!) Had cursed the city to take revenge for not being welcomed (sometimes even I would like to curse someone when I don't get well received in the stores or in the hotels....). Torun was invaded by millions of frogs devouring everything in their path. Citizens were terrified to the point of being unable to leave the houses!

So, exasperated, the mayor decided to donate a lot of gold and even the hand of his daughter (who knows why in fairy tales the girls are always bartered by the parents as if nothing happened!) to the one who would be able to defeat the frogs. Many fearless men tryed to eradicate the invasion, but the frogs arrived in droves and there was no way to make them go away. Then came a boy barefoot, a humble farmer, who began playing his violin (who would not occur to get to play violin in the midst of millions of frogs!).

The frogs were bewitched by that wonderful melody and so Janko was able to lead them out of the city. Where he let go of all of these frogs we cannot know. What is known is that Janko FOR CERTAIN married the daughter of the mayor, and they all lived happily ever after!

Being serious again... In the pic below you can see the Cathedral of Torun in the corner. In Gothic style with tall, narrow windows. Very suggestive. 

And now let's switch to food stories! We found a really cute little place called Pierogarnia that coocked the famous pierogi which I have already mentioned in the previous post about Warsaw. It is a long narrow restaurant that looks like a chalet.

They have the habit to serve as an appetizer a dish with lard that didn't taste of anything, and pickled gherkins that for the Italian tastes were really awful. But apart from that, the rest was really great!

They make traditional boiled pierogi, or in the oven and serve them in portions of 3, 5 or 9. You can take all of the same type or choose your own personal mix.

Strictly to drink hot drinks (also because outside it's really super cold!). Delicious spicy mulled wine, but I already knew that! A nice discovery however was the hot spiced beer with over a bit of cinnamon. Really must try!

Boiled pierogi were good although I still find them a bit sticky. The ones made in the oven were faboulos and the portions were of 3 to 5 because they were larger than the others (of course if you can order more).

I have made a nice mix:

• beef and cranberries
• minced meat, red beans and cheese
• chicken

Delicious especially with ground beef!

Between a competiition program and another we were able to take a stroll along the river. Luckily we got some pretty hot days (according to them) in fact it reached a maximum at -6 °C against the normal -15 ° of this period.

We found also the frozen harbor. I, like my sister, was an ice skater at a competitive level. Then unfortunately I had to stop for injuries of both me and my partner. But I still have an almost magical attraction towards ice and snow.

It seems to me that this white veil makes everything magical and enchanted. And I feel in my own environment.

But here I am talking about eating again! I'll talk about two "snacks". One always T Pierogarnia that we were stuck loyal. In fact, you can also take the sweets including cakes pierogi!!!

I wanted only one, but you could just take the portion of three and by the way my waitress told me that they were little ones........ Sure!

I drank one of the most delicious the of my life, with fruit. I shared it with my mom because they gave a hug glass with half liter of it... Always small portions!

You could order different flavors of sweet pierogi. I chose Gingerbread (one thing that I forgot to tell you is that Torun is famous for gingerbread!!!), sour cherries, almonds and chocolate and banana and white chocolate. All three truly good. Especially the one with the cherries. Chocolate blunted the cherry acidity and almonds added some cracking consistency. They were accompanied by a yogurt sauce which I believe is called kefir.

My mom took a slice of apple pie with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Very good also this and "light" as the three pierogi!

And so to the second snack. We found this very nice coffee thanks to the suggestion of natives. Modern, Starbucks style and perhaps with higher prices than the average of the local area. It seems a living room, there are books and very comfortable chairs.

I took my half liter of tea and a carrot cake with the most delicious ganache I've ever eaten. I don't know how the ganache is made, but it tasted like pure butter! I would try to do it again at home because it was really a drug!

And since I mentioned Pierniki there, the famous Gingerbread... That's where we have bought some. There were several packs, but basically it can be found natural, covered in chocolate or icing with a little bit of jam (apricot I think). Biscuits are fluffy and very Christmassy.
